Things to do in Morelia: enjoy a weekend in the capital of Michoacán

17 Jul 2018

Morelia is one of the most beautiful cities we have in Mexico, and it’s always a great delight to visit.

If you are thinking about things to do in Morelia over a weekend, here’s a recommended itinerary to make the most of your stay.

Friday in Morelia

On Friday, you’ll probably arrive in the evening, tired from your trap. For Friday, we recommend that you simply relax and plan to dine in our restaurant at the Best Western Plus Gran Hotel Morelia where you’ll find exquisite regional dishes. Sampling the Michoacan cuisine is one of the must-do items in any visit to Morelia.

You can also take advantage of the opportunity to visit the aqueduct and the Fuente de las Tarascas by car (either yours or in a taxi).

Saturday

Due to its beautiful architecture, the historic center of Morelia was named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1991. We recommend that you dedicate the entire day to explore it!

Of course, you can’t miss the heart of Morelia where you can find the Plaza de Armas and the Cathedral. Just a few steps away, there are many other attractions that are well worth discovering like the Michoacan Regional Museum, the Casa Natal de Morelos Museum, the Valladolid Plaza, the Michoacan Artisan Institute and the Dulce Museum. If you like contemporary art, you can also visit the Museum of Contemporary Art "Alfredo Zalce".

In the evening, return to the Cathedral, since every Saturday at 8:45 p.m. there is an incredible light and sound show accompanied by a spectacular fireworks show and music!

Sunday

On Sunday, visit other fascinating tourist locations of Michoacán that are close to Morelia.

If you like nature, visit Lake Zirahuén which is a charming natural beauty surrounded by a beautiful forest.

You can also visit Quiroga, which is a town famous for its arts and crafts and its delicious carnitas.

If you want to combine a Pueblo Magico with nature, then go to Patzcuaro and don’t miss the mysterious island of Janitzio.

Experience the pre-Hispanic past of Mexico at the Tzintzuntzan archaeological zone, where you’ll find the ruins of the ancient Purépecha empire.

All these attractions and things to do in Michoacan are around sixty minutes from Morelia.
