Things to do in Morelia: visit the Tzaráracua waterfalls

09 Apr 2019

The capital of the state of Michoacan is one of the most fascinating colonial cities in Mexico. While there are many things to see and do in the city of Morelia, its surroundings are very interesting to explore, as there are incredible places like Magical Towns, archaeological sites, lakes and all kinds of natural beauty.

One of these magical places is Tzararacua, one of the most beautiful waterfalls you can visit in all of Michoacan. It’s located south of Uruapan, a little bit more than 90 minutes from Morelia, a great place to practice ecotourism.

The waterfall at Tzararacua boasts an impressive drop of almost 200 ft, and pours an astounding 2 thousand gallons of water into the Cupatitzio river. The river flows through a path of volcanic rocks, producing a visual and resonant spectacle of nature.

If you are into ecotourism, you will love visiting this place because here you can hike, ride a horse, or even get a taste of adrenaline while zip lining. If you are looking to extend your visit, you can also check out Tzararacuita, a smaller waterfall (52 ft) found just past Tzararacua.

Continue the eco-adventure in Uruapan, visit Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park, home to hundreds of endemic species of flora and fauna.

This site also offers a pleasant stroll through cobblestoned paths, surrounded by an opulent variety of plant and tree species. Through out the park, you will find abounding fountains and cascades adorning the views. Each one carefully placed by the hand of men to compliment the settings in a free flowing natural way. It’s important to be mindful and respectful of the park’s natural inhabitants. Also, don’t forget to wear comfortable shoes and make sure to bring a camera.

The Barranca del Cupatitzio National Park, is the birthplace of the Cupatitzio river, which in Purepecha language, on of the main indigenous languages of the region, means “river that sings with it’s fall”. This torrential drop of water feeds the city of Uruapan.
